About Us

James Dodson (the first) started Dodson’s Moving & Storage as Cherokee Transfer, an independent mover, in March of 1949 at our present location in Oak Ridge, primarily to service the new and growing nuclear industry. In 1951 James changed the name of the company to Dodson’s Transfer, and again in 1954 to our current name, Dodson’s Moving & Storage. Due to our large expansion we now serve Knoxville, Farragut, and West Knoxville.

Dodson’s originally shared the original/current facility with L & N Railroad, who took over the entire building in 1952. Dodson’s relocated a few doors down on the same street, Warehouse Road in Oak Ridge, where we still maintain our auxillary warehouse.

James passed away suddenly while working in 1960, and his son Vic (almost 22 years old), became the new president of Dodson’s Moving & Storage. Vic finished his education while running Dodson’s, earning a bachelor’s degree in engineering.

In 1963 Dodson’s became an agent for Atlas Van Lines, and we purchased our first tractor trailer in 1966. Dodson’s Moving & Storage was incorporated in April of 1968.

With the completion of Pellissippi Parkway in the early 1970′s, Dodson’s Moving & Storage now had convienent access to the much larger Knoxville market, and the decade saw Dodson’s taking its’ first shipments all the way to the west coast as “self hauls”, a service it has maintained to the present day.

James Dodson (III) joined the company in May of 1986 after receiving his bachelor’s degree in chemistry. While working at Dodson’s, he completed work on a master’s degree from UT in transportation logistics.

In 1988, Dodson’s Moving & Storage became a stockholder in Atlas Van Lines, forming a relationship that allows our company to truly service all of our customer’s relocation needs.

Finally, in 1993, Dodson’s returned to its founding/original site, and has remained there to the present day.
